Terhemba Hembafan Primrose – THE CAMPAIGN AGAINST POOR MENSTRUAL HYGIENE
Today is one day that will remain special and memorable through my lifetime. I am glad that the day I have always longed for is here .
Over the last three (3) years I have been praying to God to give the strength and resources to close gap in the lives of thousands of adolescent girls and women particularly those in low income settings and rural settlements. The burden on my mind was to launch a campaign that will end the evitable challenges adolescent girls and women endure because of menstruation , the infections resulting from unhealthy practices, the shame, and the restrictions suffered, the anxiety about leakage and staining of their clothes or uniforms.
The statistics made available by researches on what our sisters suffer because of menstruation are terribly heart breaking. The journal family medicine report that out of about six hundred girls, two hundred and forty-five (40%)remain absent in school during their periods because of lack of privacy at school and proper education and information. The World Bank report (2005)showed that girls could miss up to four(4)consecutive days of school every month because of their period, meaning that they missed 10% to 20% of school time, which seriously impacted on their achievement. This is caused by both back of information, private washing facilities and sanitary pads.
It is disheartening that our adolescent girls and women suffer the consequences of poor menstrual hygiene, including reproductive tract and urinary tract infection, dermatitis, yeast infection and increased risk of cervical cancer. All of these are preventable.
Today, my joy knows no bound for i have taken off my heart a huge burden by launching my dream campaign against poor menstrual hygiene.
Good menstrual hygiene is crucial not just because it upholds the dignity of adolescent school girls but it is crucial for both physical and mental health.
My campaign is aimed at ensuring women and girls live in an environment that offers them opportunities and support their abilities to manage their menstruation with dignity.
This is a cause i will pursue till no woman or girl is a victim of poor menstrual hygiene.
I thank the management of INTERNATIONAL DAY SECONDARY SCHOOL LESEL for giving me the opportunity to use their school to kick off this campaign against poor menstrual hygiene and everyone who believed and support the cause.
