Tina Turner (born Anna Mae Bullock; November 26, 1939) is an American-born and naturalized Swiss singer, dancer, actress and author. Widely referred to as the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll”, she rose to prominence as the lead singer of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue before launching a successful career as a solo performer.

Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock in Brownsville, Tennessee, the youngest daughter of Floyd Richard Bullock and his wife Zelma Priscilla (née Currie). When she participated in the PBS series African American Lives 2 with Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr., she learned that her great-grandfather was a slave who had been freed after the American Civil War.

Turner began singing in church as a child and later performed in local talent shows. In 1956, she met Ike Turner, a prominent R&B musician, at a performance by his band, the Kings of Rhythm. Turner joined the band and soon became its lead singer. The Ike & Tina Turner Revue became one of the most successful R&B acts of the 1960s, scoring a string of hit singles, including “A Fool in Love” (1960), “It’s Gonna Work Out Fine” (1961), and “River Deep – Mountain High” (1966).
